Sarah Ripplinger is an editor, freelance reporter and researcher operating out of Vancouver, B.C. She is presently the Editor/ Web Editor of Momentum Magazine, momentumplanet.com.
Sarah received a Master of Journalism, specializing in sustainable development, from the University of British Columbia in 2008. She received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English literature from Carleton University in 2005. During her graduate studies, she worked as an intern reporter with Metro Vancouver and as a paid intern with the Nelson Daily News. She co-produced a news segment, which aired on the American television news program, Dan Rather Reports, with colleagues at the School of Journalism. Her master’s thesis, entitled Climate Change in the Canadian News Media: Towards a Sustainable Future, examined reporting about climate change in two mainstream newspapers in Canada and explored, more broadly, the future directions of this type of coverage. After graduating from UBC, she worked as the district council reporter for the North Shore News and as the B.C. Editor and Web/ Assistant Editor of Momentum Magazine. At the same time, she was also the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the non-profit organization, The Western Canada Society to Access Justice.
Sarah was a recipient of the Canadian Graduate Scholarship for her final year of studies at UBC. As well, she was awarded the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association Scholarship for her interest in community newspapers and the Helen Badenoch Scholarship for environmental journalism. She has worked as a researcher for the Science Journalism Research Group. She spoke at the Canadian Urban Transit Association Youth Summit on the topic of how to use social media and opposite editorials to communicate information about sustainable transportation to the public.
Her career interests are: editing, writing, communications, and environmental/ science reporting and research. She also has an interest in law and social justice issues.
